Kwanza Jones Chronicles on what comes next

Are you ready for what comes next?

Hey Love,

If you get what you want, will you be ready for what you have? That’s a question I often ask to keep myself prepared for what comes next.

Too many times, we receive the thing we’ve longed for and become overwhelmed, under-supported, or unprepared to fully step into it. That’s a missed opportunity.

Oftentimes, we think the win is in getting that “something” we’re looking for. Rights. Recognition. Resources. But that’s just the beginning. Progress demands preparation. What actions are you taking to prepare you for what comes next? And if you’re part of a community seeking change, how are you helping make sure the community is able to take full advantage when that change comes?

Just like preparing for a new season, it’s not about waiting for more; it’s about staying ready. Here’s a quick boost to help you tap into that mindset:

In this edition of the Kwanza Jones Chronicles, we’re tapping into that energy, the kind that ignites action before the moment hits. The kind that makes space for more by ensuring the foundation is solid.

Ready? Let’s get into the highlights for the month.

  • Preparation isn’t just about anticipating wins; it’s about building the strength to sustain them. That’s why The Apollo’s decision to temporarily close its doors for a full-scale renovation for the first time in nearly a century is such a powerful move. The transformation will expand its impact and ensure it continues to serve generations to come. This is a great example of what it means to prepare for the future, not just success. While the Historic Theater will be closed for renovation, performances and programming will still take place next door at the Apollo Stages at The Victoria.

  • A few weeks ago, I took the stage at The Apollo Spring Benefit as a Board Member and Premier Sponsor through the Kwanza Jones & José E. Feliciano Initiative. I had the honor of introducing the first-ever “Innovator Award” that celebrates artists who are breaking boundaries and shaping culture across disciplines. Together with fashion icon Dapper Dan and actress-comedian Sherri Shepherd, the award was presented to Teyana Taylor, celebrating her bold moves.

  • You can’t be ready for what comes next if you don’t know where you stand now. That’s why self-awareness is such a big part of preparation. It’s about checking in with yourself. What are your strengths? Where do you need support? What’s getting in your way? In Day 6 of my “7 Days of Kwanza” series, I talk about how powerful it is to be honest with yourself and with the people you trust. That kind of clarity provides the groundwork for real growth. Because the more you know yourself, the more you grow. That’s how you stay ready. Learn more about the series here.

  • Giving back is also another catalyst that boosts and prepares a community for what comes next. That’s why José, MBA ’99, and I joined with other Board of Trustees members to create a matching fund for Stanford Day of Giving. We feel blessed to be a part of such a great opportunity.

Whether you’re building with what you have, shifting how you think, or simply staying the course, the key is to keep moving forward. Every step you take now lays the foundation for what comes next.

You’ve got what it takes. Stay ready, so you don’t have to get ready.
