In a milestone event at The Apollo Theater’s 2025 Spring Benefit, Kwanza Jones presented the inaugural Innovator Award to artist and Harlem native Teyana Taylor. The evening marked a significant moment in the institution’s history as the final benefit held before the theater undergoes its first major renovation in nearly 100 years.

Jones, an Apollo board member and CEO of SUPERCHARGED, introduced the award on behalf of The Apollo in partnership with the Kwanza Jones & José E. Feliciano Initiative. Her remarks emphasized the importance of creativity, courage, and collective impact, highlighting the theater as a space where new ideas take shape and cultural influence thrives.

The Innovator Award was created to recognize individuals who defy conventions and influence culture across artistic fields. Taylor, known for her multifaceted career as a performer, director, and creative force, was chosen for her boundary-pushing work and deep connection to Harlem’s cultural legacy.

Jones shared the stage with fashion designer Dapper Dan and entertainer Sherri Shepherd to present the award. Taylor’s recognition comes as The Apollo prepares for a new era of growth, renovation, and expanded programming ahead of its centennial in 2034.

Jones appeared in a custom Alexander McQueen gown and accessories that reflected her signature style and the evening’s spirit of bold expression. Her presence and leadership at the event aligned with her long-term advocacy for cultural and social change through investment, media, and philanthropy.

In addition to the Innovator Award, the Spring Benefit honored music executive Clive Davis with the Legacy Award and an induction into The Apollo’s Walk of Fame. Davis was recognized for his decades of influence on the music industry and the careers of many prominent artists.

The event served as a celebration of The Apollo’s enduring legacy and its forward-looking vision. As the theater embarks on renovation and prepares for its centennial, the benefit reflected the values of leadership, imagination, and long-term commitment championed by Jones and others dedicated to preserving and evolving this cultural institution.
