Be Of Service: 5 Selfish Reasons To Be Selfless
By Kwanza Jones
Hey love,
Ever heard the saying - "life is not about what you can take, it's about what you can give"? I couldn't agree more.
If there is one thing that the COVID 19 pandemic has highlighted more than anything, it's that we need each other, not only to survive but to thrive.
Think about all the things people have done to help you get to where you are. Think about the mindset boosts. The motivational boosts. The mood boosts. The money boosts. And all sorts of boosts you got from others at some point in your life.
That is why I always operate from a place of gratitude. Because no one succeeds alone.
And no one likes a person who always takes and never gives. That's why, today, I'm going to give you a mindset boost.
Here are five positively selfish reasons why you should be of service.
1. You Need Others
Encouraging others and helping them grow benefits you. When you help people, they may in turn help you in the future.
And when you think about it, we are all here for a limited amount of time. Knowing this, how do you ensure that your loved ones will experience something better when you are gone? How do you do this without taking action to make the world a better place for them? If growing and thriving is something you want for them, then taking action to make the world and the people in it better will benefit you and them.
2. It Makes You Happier
In order to have sustainable, lasting, and continuous happiness, you’ve got to give. You’ve got to give to others even more than you even give to yourself. It doesn’t have to be gifts of money. It can be the gift of time. It can be the gift of resources. It can be the gift of your energy. It can be a simple text, a message, or a compliment that you’re giving. By giving any or all of these things, you begin to feel like you’ve made an impact. And that makes you happier.
3. Giving Makes You Feel Good
When you give, you receive positive feedback in the form of appreciation. You experience the joy of giving to others. You see the impact of your actions in their lives. This makes you feel like you have a purpose. And that makes you feel good. It’s just like exercising – your body releases “feel-good'' chemicals called endorphins. And this feeling is great for your health.
Just think about it. When you give, it makes you feel good and improves your health. That’s a SUPERCHARGED® way to give yourself a BOOST.
4. You Get Something For Yourself
Although I don’t usually think of it this way – some people would say giving for a selfish reason is giving with the hope that you’re going to get something out of it. Maybe it’s more access, an expansion of your network, more opportunities, or whatever it may be. Your motivations to give may be questionable to some, but the fact is, you’re still helping people.
If you’re able to help others while you’re helping yourself, that's a win.
5. You Get Praise And Recognition
You may get praise, gratitude, and recognition from others when you serve or help them. But more importantly, you get praise and recognition from those that matter to you. Your friends, your family, your loved ones. Maybe you want your parents to say “We knew we raised you right”. Or you want your loved ones to know that you care about those around you.
Gratitude, praise, and recognition are great incentives to be of service
When you give, it all comes back to you. We need each other, not only to survive but to thrive. When you really think about it, you begin to understand that you belong to something greater than yourself. You begin to see that we are all connected.
Remember, no one succeeds alone. Sometimes, you need a BOOST. And giving a BOOST to others is a great way to get the boost you need to live a SUPERCHARGED life. Because we are better together.
